Trazodone tablets

Desyrel was originally developed in 1960's Italy by Angelini research labs. It was developed after it was hypothesized that major depression is associated with a descreased pain threshold. The FDA approved tradzodone in 1981.

Trazodone is used to treat depression with or without anxiety. Trazodone is being investigated for use in combination with tryptophan for treating aggressive behavior, panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks. Trazodone is also being tested for the treatment of cocaine withdrawal and in combination with serotonin reuptake inhibitors to treat insomnia and alcoholism.

The usual starting dosage for Trazodone is a total of 150 milligrams per day, divided into 2 or more smaller doses. Your doctor may increase your dose by 50 milligrams per day every 3 or 4 days. Total dosage should not exceed 400 milligrams per day, divided into smaller doses. Once you have responded well to the drug, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. Because this medication makes you drowsy, your doctor may tell you to take the largest dose at bedtime.

Side effects of Trazodone although rare may happen and include: Abdominal or stomach disorder, aches or pains in muscles and bones, anger or hostility, blurred vision, brief loss of consciousness, confusion, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, dizziness or light-headedness, drowsiness, dry mouth, excitement, fainting, fast or fluttery heartbeat, fatigue, fluid retention and swelling, headache, inability to fall or stay asleep, low blood pressure, nasal or sinus congestion, nausea, nervousness, nightmares or vivid dreams, tremors, uncoordinated movements, vomiting, weight gain or loss.

The effects of Trazodone during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Trazodone may appear in breast milk. If treatment with Trazodone is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding your baby until your treatment is finished.

Trazodone may intensify the effects of alcohol. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Trazodone may cause you to become drowsy or less alert and may affect your judgment. Therefore, you should not drive or operate dangerous machinery or participate in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you.

If Trazodone is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Trazodone with the following: Antidepressant drugs known as MAO inhibitors, other antidepressants such as fluoxetine and desipramine, Barbiturates, Central nervous system depressants or drugs for high blood pressure.

Always consult your physician for any questions you may have on Trazodone if there is information listed that you do not understand. Drink plenty of water when taking your Trazodone and unless it states to do so never take your medicine on an empty stomach. It is helpful to establish a time each day to take this Trazodone to maintain consistency. Please follow the directions closely when taking this medicine as there are side effects.
